Blog Entry #1: 1810-1820

 DATE: 4th September, 1816

AGE: 14 today (it's my birthday!!)

ACADEMIC FOCUS: I want to study literature because always I have free-time what I like the most is to write a small fragments of a book in English I want to make and I'm already doing.

CONTEXT: I still live at the beautiful city I was born on, Marseilles, France. I'm not that into the politics and all of that stuff, but if it was a revolution on coming, I would definitely support it, because I mean, I'm not asking food or money at the streets, but I could be if it was not for my parents. I really hope people don't have to live that situation never, it must be awful, no question about that. May be o may be not, the goverNment is going to be good and we would live on a much better society, but if it keeps just like this, I'm sure there is actually going to be a revolution (I agree).

CHANGE/ CONTINUITY : It has not been my best birthday definitely, but also it is understandable , I have a lot of school work to do honestly and my parents come back of work in a few minutes, so I'm definitely having cake today:). But, what was the school work I needed to do? Well, that's what I want to explain right now. It's about biology, and honestly there is no more boring thing than that at least for me haha, so, the teacher wants me to explain how do the human body is capable to do all the process of digestion and I clearly could  just answer that God wanted the human body to be like that, but since I "misbehave" according to the crazy teacher I can't answer that so I need to research much more ON MY BIRTHDAY, it's sad haha.

CAUSE/EFFECT: I think that the Enlightenment had place manly because the people started thinking different than "because god wanted it that way". They wanted a new explanation, something that they can prove it's actually real. Obviously a positive effect of this huge movement, it's the start of the scientific and critical thinking about everything. The only negative effect I see/think of it was for the church, with no doubt people stopped trust blindly on church, and also, for example, they stopped paying their access to the "sky" and obviously , the church lost more than a lot.

TIME/PLACE: Well, about the other places at the world, I've learned that Americas are not that different from Europe, the most that can afford it and are allowed to, study, and the other ones, in general, they work, so in that way it's similar; even on the coin, they have a unique coin, such as us.  In difference of Africa, in Europe it's strange you see a dark slave (or at least that is the way that my school describes it) getting punished for not doing what he is supposed to, work with no rest. It is completely horrible. I would like to live or at least visit the Americas, just because I guess it's pretty similar to here, and just to add something else, I already know english haha.

PERSPECTIVES: With no question, I would say that the most interesting enlightenment philosopher for me, it's Charles Louis de Secondat, or more known as Montesquieu. I have a reason and it is that, for my country, France, there would not be anything better than the separation of powers, there would be more social justice so the world and all countries would change, it would not be just what the king says:), but I also have the confidence one day and one country will use Montesquieu idea and he would be remembered as one of the best enlightenment philosophers ever, I have no dudes about it. My favorite quote of him is: "There is no nation so powerful, as the one that obeys its laws not from principals of fear or reason, but from passion." It means that the power of the countries is the same but the one's that obey the law and are just, are simply, the best:)

  3. Montesquieu sounds like he is a great philosopher. The separation of power sounds great. Nevertheless, I prefer Voltaire, whose work about God and tolerance seem to me revolutionary. I left my blog´s direction in a comment to your profile in case you want to read a little about Voltaire.

  5. I am sorry for your biology homework, but in the other hand, I think that you explained really well why France should have separation of powers, I certainly knew to little about this, but you honestly you gave me the curiosity to keep digging for information about Montesquieu.
